Finishing
Flags are typically finished in one of two ways, either
with a header and grommets or with a pole sleeve. The
finishing depends on how the flag will ultimately be
displayed and the requirements of the pole or hardware
being used. It is important to decide how your flag
will be displayed before placing your order. If you are
unsure on the proper finishing please consult a sales
representative.
A header is a sold stripe of material that runs along one
side of the flag which housed the grommets. A header
is used so that the grommets do not impact the design
of the flag and also to help reinforce the flag for display.
Traditionally it is on the left side but can be on any side
depending on how it will be displayed. For Economy
Polyester, plastic or vinyl flags and banner the header
is made of the same material as the flag itself. Nylon
and knitted polyester come with a canvas header,
to insure durability outdoors. All headers are white
unless requested otherwise. Colored or custom header
maybe change the price of your flag, consult a sales
representative for pricing information.
Grommets are metal rings used to create a strong
reinforced base in the header (or directly into the fabric
in the case of vinyl) that allows a flag or banner to be
hung or displayed in a variety of ways. Grommets are
traditional a matte gold color (but are available in silver
upon request) and are either brass plated or real brass.
AGAS used plated grommets that are rust resistant
and coasted to ensure color fastness. Real brass
grommets do not rust and are used standard only on US
Embroidered flags and nautical flags, due to cost and
weight. 2 grommets are standard on flag up to 6'x10'.
Additional grommets can be added upon request.
Flags larger than 6'x10' also have a header but instead
of grommets they have a rope and thimble. These large
flags can be too large and heavy to hang with grommets
and so a rope is sewn into the sleeve to reinforce it
and two metal thimbles are sewn in. This allows for
the flag to be easily hoisted onto a halyard and insures
durability. Thimbles are standard on all stock flags
8'x12' and above and are optional on any custom
design.
Alternatively flags that will be displayed on certain
poles, such as indoor displays often come with pole
sleeves instead. Similar to a header the pole sleeve
is also traditionally on left hand side and white but
is hollow so that a pole can in inserted for hanging.
Alternate locations and colors are available upon
request.
Poles sleeve require more precision than a header as the sleeve but be right size and specifications for the pole or hardware you are using. When ordering a flag or banner with a poles sleeve you must offer the following information:
• Diameter of the pole or hardware the flag is to be hung
from (or the size of the sleeve needed flat)
• Does the sleeve need to be close or open on the top?
• Do you require a leather tab on one or both sides on the
sleeve? (see page ##)
• On which sides do you need the sleeve(s) to fit your pole
or hardware
Sometimes the final display of the product is unknown or subject to change, in this case a sleeve with grommets is
recommended. This finishing can be done in one of two ways; firstly, you a standard sleeve will be sewn and then
4 grommets are added to the sleeve, 2 in front and 2 on the back. Secondly, a standard sleeve and be sewn and
grommets can be added above or below the sleeve, this option is mostly used with vinyl banners that are hung on
complicated hardware, like street banner. Both options are available on most products upon request.
When a flag is used for a ceremonial or decorative purpose often times a fringe is added. A fringe is a decorative
boarder consisting of short lengths of thread that hand from the flag. Fringe can be on one side or all around a
flag. Gold fringe is traditional but many other colors are available upon request. Gold Fringe is standard on all USA
indoor flags displayed on a pole.
